Freeman Sleep Center Expands

October 07, 2021

Sleep Medicine Physician Offices and Testing Services in Centralized Location

Joplin, Mo – Freeman Health System celebrated the grand opening of its expanded Sleep Center with a ribbon cutting. The expansion brings together the offices of Sleep Medicine Specialist Dr. Jason Maxfield and the overnight sleep testing facility.

“Good sleep improves cognition, concentration, productivity and performance,” said Paula F. Baker, Freeman President and Chief Executive Officer. “It can also maximize problem-solving skills and enhance memory. If you’ve ever missed a few of hours sleep, you know it can make you feel like you’re running on empty. Additionally, lack of sleep can adversely affect your risk for heart disease and stroke and is a leading risk factor for obesity. This is why Freeman is investing in sleep medicine and Freeman Sleep Center.”

Freeman Sleep Center was recently renovated, expanding its square footage to allow for two more sleep study laboratory beds and remodeling other sleep study rooms, increasing the number of patients that can be studied each night from four to six. Having the clinic and sleep lab in one location enables better collaboration between the daytime sleep medicine clinic, daytime sleep technologies and overnight sleep testing team, as well as ease of access for patients.

“The expansion is exciting,” said Dr. Jason Maxfield, sleep medicine specialist. “The extra space gives us larger more comfortable clinic rooms, better work areas for staff, more storage for sleep equipment and room to grow in the future. We also upgraded our software, which now offers greater sensitivity in taking readings during a sleep study, improving accuracy and efficiency. The new system includes better sensors, better amplifiers and new computers with better software to manipulate the data for physician review and interpretation.”

Freeman Sleep Center is a multi-disciplinary specialty clinic that provides diagnosis and treatment for people ages four and up who experience problems with poor sleep. Dr. Maxfield takes a comprehensive approach to treating all sleep problems, including snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs, narcolepsy, fatigue, excessive daytime sleepiness, nocturnal seizures and sleep behaviors like sleepwalking and adjustment to shift work.

Dr. Maxfield is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology in both Neurology and Sleep Medicine. He attended medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.
