Cedar Hill residents return home
JOPLIN, Mo.—For the first time in six months, residents of Ozark Center Cedar Hill Apartments are coming home.
Damage to the 15-apartment complex sustained during the May 22 tornado was so extensive that the apartments were uninhabitable. Prior to the storm, it was home to individuals who needed assistance transitioning back into the community after learning to live with their mental illness or who were completing a substance abuse treatment program.
“For many of these individuals, the reopening of Cedar Hill means they are getting their independence back,” said Lisa Badgley, Program Development Director. “They miss their home and they miss each other.”
Members of the media are welcome to interview Cedar Hill Apartment residents as they move into the restored facility. Residents will be available from 10 – 11 am on Tuesday, November 1. Cedar Hill Apartments is located at 1807 West 30th Street in Joplin.
Though most of the Cedar Hill Apartments residents were home when the May 22 storm struck, none were injured. Many have lived with friends and family since the apartments were damaged.
Of the three Housing and Urban Development-assisted apartment complexes run by Ozark Center, two were significantly damaged. At Cedar Hill Apartments, which was opened in November 2005, the storm destroyed interior walls and ceilings, blowing out windows and ruining belongings. Magnolia Heights Apartments, opened in September 2007, was also heavily damaged and is expected to reopen in December 2011.
