Dr. John Cox, Cardiologist, Freeman Heart & Vascular Institute
Director of the Freeman Catheterization Laboratory, Dr. John Cox has practiced cardiology in Joplin and the surrounding area for more than 19 years.
Under Cox’s leadership, the cardiac program has grown from its beginnings in a mobile trailer into the comprehensive Freeman Heart & Vascular Institute, offering diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitation services in one convenient location.
“I was attracted to medicine by the challenge of using science to help people live more productive lives,” Cox says. “Cardiologists care for some of the most critical patients in the hospital, and I enjoy the satisfaction of restoring these patients to healthy and active lives.”
Early in his career in Joplin, Cox became aware that many patients sought care for heart and vascular disease outside southwest Missouri. Although Cox had the training and the talent to perform the procedures that would aid these patients, the medical equipment and support were not available locally. He felt Joplin should offer state-of-the-art, high quality heart care comparable to the care a patient would find at the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medical Center, or Cleveland Clinic.
Cox envisioned a cardiology unit at a local hospital that would provide this care for patients so they would not have to travel far from home. From the success of the first cardiac catheterization in 1992, the Freeman cardiovascular care program was born.
